Partnership Programs on Innovation supported during 2018-19


Department of Science & Technology partners with various organizations, industries and provate sector with an objective to foster innovation and startup ecosystem in the country through specialized programs. These programs tap innovations/startups through nation wide call for applications, followed by a selection process, mentoring , pitching / demo day . The winners of such programs are either given cash award, grant support or seed investment or incubation support in line with the program framework. Most of these program are implemented by DST supported TBIs directly or TBIs are associated as additional partners. Some of these programs also offer Immersion programs/ experiential learning visit/Market access to countries such as Canada, Israel, Taiwan, Switzerland, Rwanda and USA. DST also supports few programs on nurturing and supporting women entrepreneurs in the country.

•  DST-Lockheed Martin-Tata Trusts India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP2.0)

The India Innovation Growth Programme 2.0 for the year 2018 was launched on 21 st March , 2018 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. India Innovation Growth Program (IIGP) is a unique public private partnership initiated in 2007 between Government of India's Department of Science and Technology and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Tata Trusts joined the newly revamped India Innovation Growth Programme 2.0 .

After conducting fifteen pan India roadshows and other social media platforms, ,a total of 3125 applications were received under IIGP2.0 for the year 2018 . For the top 50 Open Innovation Challenge teams, and 4 Univ challenge winners, a rigorous one week bootcamp was organized at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad during 16 th – 21 st July, 2018. Earlier to this, the down-select event for University Challenge Competition was organized at IIT-Bombay for both the industrial and social tracks. The Open Innovation Competition was held during 1 st -2 nd August, 2018 , in Delhi where 47 startups pitched to an eminent jury panel . Subsequently, the top 15 winners from Univ challenge and top 16 teams under Open Innovation Teams were awarded. Each university team was awarded a cash award of Rs. 10 Lakhs and each open innovation team was awarded Rs. 25 Lakhs. The top 10 awardees of the Open Innovation Challenge were taken to the USA for a global learning visit from September 25 th to 3 rd Oct. 2018. A demo day for innovator Investor meet was organised on 21 st Dec 2018 in Bengaluru, where 15 IIGP winners participated. A design thinking workshop was help for univ teams during 13-16 th March 2018min IIT Mumbai. Finally an industrial immersive day for 16 startups was facilitated by program partners at Tata Steel on 28 th March 2019 in Jamshedpur.

2.0 DST-Texas Instruments “India Innovation Challenge and Design Contest (IICDC) 2018”

DST has partnered with the Texas Instruments to scout, motivate, validate and incubate Engineering students driven innovative design ideas with commercial potential under Make in India, anchored by MyGov platform and implemented through Indian institute of Management, Bangalore. The top 10 teams selected through IICDC 2017 version were facilitated through physical incubation along with seed support of Rs. 20 lakhs each at NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore during F.Y. 2018-19. This year's edition of IICDC 2018 has seen an exponential growth in the participation by 26511 students from 1760 colleges submitting 10146 ideas who dream of paving future of India with engineering solutions and path breaking innovative ideas. The process of shortlisted for the further stage of the program for prototype building , field testing and validation are already underway.

3.0 Second version of First of its kind hardware acceleration and incubation program : Plugin by DST-Intel India and SINE- IIT Bombay

For the second version of Plugin 2018, an year long program focussed on hardware and systems based startups, a total of 260 applications were received. Boot camps were conducted in Bangalore and Mumbai. During Jan. 2019, a cohort of 10 startups were taken for learning visit to Taiwan hardware ecosystem. Overall the program through focussed sessions and mentoring helped companies in patent filing, accelerate product development, customer validation and business model development and served a felt need for providing mentoring and market connect in product development for hardware.

4.0 Academia Industry Training (AIT) Programme

The “Academia-Industry Training (AIT) Camp” is an initiative funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India and the Indo-Swiss Joint Research Program (ISJRP) of SERI, Switzerland, to promote research and technological entrepreneurship. Two week-long camps are conducted in India and Switzerland in two phases, for the participants with an aim to enhance the interaction of academic researchers/ innovators with the industry as well as connect both the countries towards joint research and eventual commercialization. Two Indian participantsare awarded an AIT Innovation Grant of INR 10,00,000/- each sponsored by DST.

5.0 Indo Canada Bilateral Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program on Technology Start-ups companies

The India – Canada Bilateral Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program is a market entry / access program aimed at Indian and Canadian growth-stage tech companies interested in exploring opportunities to scale their businesses in the reciprocating bilateral markets. Selected companies will receive mentoring; special access to industry leaders, strategic partners and talents; and connection with clients and investors through a dedicated boot camp program, virtual coaching and mentoring and a 2-week outbound market access program. This program is also open newer markets for startups on both sides of the border in terms of new clients, talent and capital access.

Impact FY 2018-19

12 companies visited Canada for a period of 2 weeks and provided mentorship, business development advice, customer connects, investor access and valuable international experience. During the visit to Canada, they had an interaction with the Govt's. of Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, CGI Group, Toronto Global, Shopify, Royal Bank of Canada, Fasken, Pace Law Firm, Ryerson University, Launch Academy, University of Calgary, Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, Ontario Centres of Excellence, Calgary Economic Development.They also had 1-on-1 meetings for the companies with potential customers / partners, EIR's of Venture Labs, Start ups Participated in Rainforest, Calgary's Community Meet up, Govt of Alberta organized Rainforest, a grand event for the NBI Companies to meet all relevant stakeholders in Calgary.

•  4 out of the 12 companies are looking to set up in North America through the startup visa program within 2 years.

•  Trendlyne is in the process of their startup visa program to set up in Toronto.

•  Perfect Fit has already made 2 visits to Canada post the program and has set up their company in Calgary and is in the process of applying for PR as well.

•  Detect Technologies are in the process of setting up in Houston, USA and will look to incorporate in Calgary within 2 years.

•  SIBIA Analytics is currently in the process of setting up in Singapore and are looking to set up in Canada by next year.

•  Oizom to start POC's in Canadian airports - Toronto and Montreal. They are also in talks with working with Sidewalk Labs, whom they met in Toronto.

•  Wobot Intelligence are looking for potential opportunities of partnering with Envysion as they operate in the same space as them. Was connected to them by Virginia, who is the EIR at VentureLabs in Vancouver.

•  Pingal Technologies are in talks with ScotiaBank and RBC of doing POCs, whom they met during the 2-week program.

 

6.0 India Rwanda Innovation Growth Program (IRIGP)

Aligning with visionary outreach to African nations – ‘India shares for it cares', DST for the first time has partnered with FICCI to roll out India Rwanda Innovation Growth Program in the year 2018. The Program identifies and scouts for validated Indian technologies/ innovations culled through a unique and rigorous evaluation process to create sustainable social joint projects/ ventures in Rwanda. The Program aims to deploy 20 demonstrated and validated Indian technologies and innovations over a period of two years. During the year 2018-19, a Business Accelerator and Capacity Building Workshop under the India-Rwanda Innovation Growth Programme (IRIGP) successfully concluded during (June11-15, 2018) at Kigali, Rwanda .  Eleven Indian and Rwandan partners successfully signed Business Engagement Agreements for technology collaboration in key focus sectors of Agriculture, Health, IT, Renewable Energy and Leather. Having successfully demonstrated impact in India, these Indian technologies are now ready to be scaled and replicated in Rwanda in partnership with Rwandan enterprises. These technologies were also showcased to the key innovation ecosystem stakeholders from Rwanda at the technology expo organised on June 14, 2018 in Kigali.

7.0 DST- ABI- IUSSTF supports Women Entrepreneurship Quest (WEQ) 2018

WEQ is a unique program designed to promote and showcase early-stage technology ventures which are founded or led by women entrepreneurs in all technologies. The program is one of its kind to be organized in the country for tapping talented technical women. The program has been running successfully for 4 years and offers an excellence platform to tap and support women entrepreneurs in technology. It is anchored by AnitaB.org along with IUSSTF. WEQ 2017 winners were taken for a week long experiential learning visit to Silicon Valley in May 2018 which offers them good connects, knowledge on access to mentoring and exposure to Investor pitches for scaling up in new markets. Over 250 applications for WEQ 2018 were received against the call, and vetted by a team of mentors and program partners. Top 10 winners will be 32 women Entrepreneurs are the alumni of this program, and 21have grown their start-ups to next level. The WEQ 2018 finale was held on 14 th November 2018 year during AnitaB.org's flagship conference in Bangalore, the Grace Hopper Celebration India 2018 (GHCI 18), one of the largest conferences for women technologists in the country. The Top 10 winners were selected from applications received from across India. The applicants were evaluated on strength of team, unique business preposition and market traction.

8.0 Women Accelerator programme “Powered” by Zone Start-ups, Bombay Stock Exchange Institute, Mumbai

The powered programme is a first of its kind entrepreneurship programme focused on twin Sustainable Development Goals of Energy and Diversity , designed exclusively for women entrepreneurs in energy sector. The program is a joint initiative of Shell Foundation and Zone Startups and jointly funded by DFID, UK and DST, Government of India.   Post its launch in the Month of April, 2018, the accelerator program received an overwhelming response of over 130 applications from a multitude of women entrepreneurs across the country from varied backgrounds creating innovative solutions in the broader energy sector. Out of these, top 10 startups were selected for first cohort. As part of the program offering, the cohort was provided with a 6 week 12 days residential mentoring program and concluded on 6 th September 2018 with a Demo Day held in Delhi.

 

9.0 Women Startup Program (WSP)

The WSP program was conducted successfully by NSRCEL-IIM Bangalore which reached out to 6200 women across the country through MOOC program. It had partners IIM Indore, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Nagpur, IIM Udaipur and IIM Vizag. Goldman Sachs was also a partner in this program. A total of 97 women entrepreneurs were supported through boot camp, fellowship and prototype support , exchange visit to Israel.

 

10.0 Mentorship Program: “Women Entrepreneurship and Empowerment (WEE)”

WEE (Women entrepreneurship and empowerment) Mentorship program is 4 month program initiated b y WEE Foundation to empower and encourage women entrepreneurs. It facilitates training women in entrepreneurship skills, mentoring and enabling them to convert their idea(s) into a successful business models. During the year, two WEE programs were conducted at IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. Top 10 out of the cohort of 70 were awarded upto Rs.5.00 lakh each.
